Ilex's shell was built by David Piper in 1972. Boats built at this time are well constructed with hull steel estimated between 4-6mm. Surveys have confirmed these general figures. Ilex has very recently been repainted externally to a high standard at a local marina. The hull was sand blasted and 2 pack epoxy paint applied in 2020. This is a much longer lasting solution compared with traditional blacking. There are 6 sacrificial anodes fitted.
Rear access from the engine room was closed off by a previous owner so that a double bed could be installed in the rear cabin area. This benefits from the full width of the boat across the beam at gunnel height.
Main access to the boat is via the front. Metal steps give access to a well deck and two bow doors provide access to the cabin. The front of the boat has two gas lockers the starboard side housing the gas bottle connected to the kitchen appliances with a space for a spare gas bottle on the port side. There is an additional smaller locker between these for extra storage. The front of the boat is covered with a bespoke wooden framed canvas cratch cover which provides weather proof shelter. There is a tunnel light fixed outside this.
There is a swan hatch to the port side of the boat which can provide alternative access to the corridor area next to the bathroom. This can provide additional ventilation in hot weather. The windows are single glazed but do have the advantage that the glass can easily be removed for cleaning and also can provide extra ventilation in very hot weather. Window boards, each with unique artwork, backed with cellotex help insulate the windows in colder weather whilst also providing shading in very hot weather too.
Living room: Heating provided by Boatman Stove with main flue pipe recently replaced. There is a back boiler which provides heating to the rear cabin via a radiator. There is a 12v digital colour TV.
Under the well deck is a Jabsco water pump which provides water to the cold water supply via a Jabsco water filter and hot water through the gas heater.
Kitchen: A Stoves Newhome 500 DTT gas cooker is equipped with four gas rings a grill and oven. The Rinnai BU150 gas heater provides instant hot water for washing up and hot water for the bathroom. This unit was refurbished in 2023. There is a dining table and two wooden chairs. A 12v cool-box is also provided for keeping food in hot weather.
Bathroom: There is a hip bath with shower attachment, a wash basin and a cassette toilet.
Bedroom: A double bed has been installed to provide enough width for a double mattress. The area beneath the bed provides extensive storage space with shelving and a metal safe is also available. There is a small chest of draws and a hanging rail for clothes. The MT 50 charge controller is situated here to provide monitoring of the charging state of the leisure batteries.
The BMC 1.5 diesel engine is water cooled, has 4 cylinders and has been regularly serviced by a qualified engineer. The gearbox is a Newage Delta 30. An automated bilge pump is fitted adjacent to the mud box. There is a shoreline connection and also an inverter with 3 110Ah leisure batteries and a starter battery. The leisure batteries were renewed in Feb 2024 and these are charged by solar panels when sufficient sunlight is available, or via the alternator when the engine is running. There is a battery charger which can be connected to the shoreline.
Fire blankets and fire extinguishers comply with Boat Safety Requirements.
